Waltham Forest Learning Disability Scheme


The Waltham Forest Learning Disability Service was set up to support adults 18-65 with a primary learning disabilities diagnosis to make the step into supported housing from family and other residential settings. The service offers support to service users, which is tailored to their individual needs. Support is offered in a planned way with the service users with the aim of developing and promoting independent living skills. The service does not offer personal care, and should such a need arise contact will be made with external agencies to support this and finding for such a service agreed. The project consists of 5 self-contained one bedroom flats in Waltham Forest provided by MHT. Tenancies are assured, and as such, tenants enjoy the same rights as other MHT tenants i.e. in terms of privacy and independence. Tenants may smoke, drink, have visitors, come and go as they please - as long as they do not cause nuisance as described under the tenancy agreement. All facilities are private apart from the garden which is communal. Accommodation is dispersed in general needs new build estate. There are written policies for complaints, bullying and accessing interpreters. These are explained to tenants when they sign up and through the Service User's Handbook. StepForward has a resource of preferred providers for translation and interpretation which can be accessed as soon as the need has been identified. Among other things, support is provided around: . Referral to appropriate specialist services such as culturally specific resource centres. . Finding constructive daytime activities . Gaining access to health and social service provision . Linking into existing borough support services for adults with a Learning Disability . Assisting with welfare benefits and housing issues . Managing finances
